Designing Over 7,000 Homes Over Four Decades with Karl Whitten

A Relationship Built Over Decades

For over four decades, Karl Whitten has helped shape the architectural landscape of Boulder County and much of the US. Karl is the founder of Whitten Design Group, who designed thousands of homes. These include straightforward ranch houses to some of the most imaginative custom residences Colorado has seen.

On this episode of Built By Insights, Matt Krueger sits down with Karl not just as a podcast guest, but as a long-time collaborator. Their relationship spans more than 20 years and over a hundred projects built together, making this conversation a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how great architecture and great building truly work hand in hand. also this episode includes an interesting look at the “Volcano House” Karl in Boulder which in the 90’s. Which had a “volcano” with a style of a polynesian paradise, with a 30 foot waterfall and fire pole.

This blog pulls highlights from a three-part podcast series that explores Karl’s journey, philosophy, and the lasting impact of thoughtful design.

Growing Up in Boulder and Designing it!

Karl’s path into architecture started early. Growing up in Boulder, he was surrounded by successful architects who made a lasting impression. When he was a child he spent a summer in Mexico City with a very accomplished architect. After spending time with them he felt his direction was clear.

After starting his professional career in 1978, Karl quickly became known for his productivity and creativity. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, he was designing homes at an incredible pace primarily in Colorado, but eventually across the country and internationally.

Projects followed clients wherever life took them, which included England, Belize, which are often rooted in long-standing relationships.

Early Lessons: Learning the Hard Way

Karl’s first architectural jobs were a challenge.

One of his earliest projects included a modest ranch home in North Boulder and a challenging garage addition to a historic home known as “The Castle” on Ninth Street.

He was the first to admit he was out of his depth and that experience shaped how he approached design going forward. Those early challenges laid the foundation for a career built on practicality, problem-solving, and a deep respect for the construction process. This laid the groundwork for him to design in between the number of 5,000 to 10,000 homes in his lifetime with no signs of slowing down soon.

Founding Whitten Design Group

After nearly two decades working under a mentor, Karl purchased the firm in the mid-1990s and officially launched Whitten Design Group. From that point forward, his work became woven into the fabric of the Front Range and Boulder County.

Custom homes, spec homes, and high-end subdivisions across Boulder, Longmont, and Northern Colorado all carry Karl’s design influence. If you’ve driven through many of the front ranges established neighborhoods, chances are that you’ve seen Karl’s work firsthand.

An Architect Who Understands Builders

One of the defining qualities of Karl’s work is his builder collaboration mindset. Early in his career, many of his clients were builders. These professionals understand lots, budgets, schedules, and the constraints that often shape what is feasible in a build.

Over time, it shaped Karl into what I would call a true builder’s architect, someone who not only listens to a client’s vision but translates it into something that can actually be built efficiently and beautifully.

This philosophy is why the collaboration between Built By Krueger and Whitten Design Group has endured for decades. When Built By Krueger and Karl collaborate on the complex, design-forward projects, the shared understanding and language has been a constant advantage.

What we do together is we're able to form the team, where you do what you do very well, and I do what I do very well. I've seen a lot of design build firms that they may do one of them well but rarely do you see where they sort of have both sides.
